Meet Your Trainer

Hi! I'm Kiersten, owner of Bonsai Dogs.

Bonsai Dogs is here to help people with their dog's behavioral issues. You name it, I can fix it. I promise not to waste your time with ineffective methods that don't get to the root of the issues. My training will open up your dog's world so that you can trust them again and give them more freedom. Life’s just way better with a well-trained dog by your side.

If you're in the greater Seattle area and looking for a dog trainer who can deliver results, give me a call!

In 2022, my love of dogs led me to work at a doggie daycare, where I learned more about canine behavior and communication. Managing hundreds of dogs of different breeds, sizes, and temperaments taught me how to anticipate potential conflicts and make thoughtful decisions to keep every dog safe and comfortable.

That career ultimately led me to meeting my mentor Ted Efthymiadis, a renowed balanced dog trainer who has written 7 books and traveled the world teaching veterinarians and dog trainers how to level up their skills working with problematic dogs. Under his mentorship, I've developed skills to use balanced training thoughtfully and effectively.

My Training Philosophy

Most of my clients have already done a bunch of training with their dog, either on their own or with a professional trainer. There's two reasons people still struggle after investing time and money into finding a solution. One, they don't have a coach helping them step-by-step to set a foundation, giving them a detailed process to follow everyday customized to their dog and living situation. Or two, they chose a trainer who will only consider positive training methods and assumes it works for every dog.

For some dogs, treats and praise isn't enough. Forcing dog owners to only use positive methods when it isn't effective for their dog leads to years of struggle and frustration. Have you ever asked your dog to do something and they totally blew you off? Yeah, it happens all the time.

In balanced training, we use food, treats, toys, and praise to increase the likelihood of seeing more good behaviors. However, if that’s all we do, there are still times when your dog will decide they rather not listen to you - and that's when corrections are needed: to decrease unwanted behaviors and make your dog’s behavior reliable. That’s all that balanced training is. Knowing when to use the positive, understanding its limitations, and implementing corrections once your dog knows what’s expected.
